Predicted impact of pandemic on future housing projects

There has been an unprecedented change in various facets of life with the pandemic upon us, and this includes future house designs and architecture. This is for a number of reasons, primarily because we have all retreated to our homes for safety in these times. The way we look at our personal spaces over the year so far has changed dramatically.

Wellness, work-life balance, and hygiene have become the main focus of our days, and it has not been easy. We now eat, exercise, work, sleep, play, cook, and socialize all within the confines of our homes. Since all of these factors play a major role in our welfare, future home design is being rethought of along these lines.

Here’s a look at how the pandemic will change how we design homes in the future.

Home offices

For most of us, the major shift has been in moving our workplace home. Many have resorted to converting their dining table into their workspace. But this is the same space meals are had. For others, it’s been their bedroom, which is supposed to be a place to unwind, relax, and sleep.

But without proper setup and no access to a designated space for work alone, these problems go unresolved. This can make someone feel like they’re stuck in an endless cycle with no change in their surroundings, resulting in poor mental health over time. Which is why home offices will be a large part of future house designs.

In order to keep personal and professional spaces from blending into one another, keeping them apart will make it easier to plug out for the remainder of the day.

Optimized storage

Working remotely has also made it clear that the way our spaces are arranged and the way we manage them can affect our productivity greatly. And while this holds true with our makeshift home offices, it also holds true for other areas around the house.

Many may have noticed that their kitchens, laundry rooms, and bedrooms are more cluttered. In households with children or large families, this may be present even more. To prevent this, futuristic house design will be simplistic and will optimize storage the way it best can. With built-in cupboards and drawers, as well as a rise in the inclusion of pantries and modular kitchens in home designs, this will make organization easy and efficient. Feng shui home tips will also prove useful when designing homes.

Outdoor spaces

Our homes are our sanctuaries, but we all miss being outdoors. The future home design will definitely include more outdoor areas within the home, such as terraces, patios, verandahs, and more. Gardening has also become more widespread as a go-to therapeutic activity. It offers interaction with nature, a pause on our daily affairs, and calming touch. So whether it’s in the form of a small patch of soil outdoors, a set of pots on a balcony, or a kitchen garden fitted into a window sill, spaces for gardening will become a part of future house designs as well.

These designs will help incorporate both physical and mental wellbeing into our home spaces, and the amenities will enable residents to enjoy time outdoors safely. This will also impact design within the house as people try to bring in the outdoors inside their homes more. This will be reflected with skylights, larger and longer windows, and wider floor plans for spacious rooms.

Sustainable homes

In addition to these predicted design trends, people are also becoming more mindful about reducing their carbon footprint as the world has slowly seen a positive change with lockdowns in place across the globe. These situations have made it difficult for people to access the resources they need, and awareness of depleted supplies has increased the understanding that this may continue on with other essentials as well. This has led to the rising importance of eco-friendly developments in a post-COVID world.

It is also noticeable that the expenses of a house have increased. With more people at home and more hours spent indoors compared to months before the lockdown, bills are higher and more utilities are being used. For these reasons, futuristic house designs will incorporate sustainability to be more mindful of our consumption of energy.

Natural lighting, water conservation, insulation, the use of solar energy, alternate power generators, renewable energy, and clean energy-saving options will be explored much more. Doing so will also increase self-sufficiency, helping to increase independence, lowering the need to step out as often.

To conclude, future house designs will heavily rely on proximity to greenery, nature, recreation, and resources that do not require anyone to step too far away from their home base. Most of these essential lifestyle requirements will be made available within the home itself, which design can help accommodate. Plotted development projects can use these insights to help people design their dream homes with consideration and comfort.
